Abramis Brama - _Smakar Söndag_
(Record Heaven / Transubstans Records, 2009)
by: Quentin Kalis (8 out of 10)
Forget any preconceived notions you may have that this stoner quintet are named after some aspect of Eastern mysticism, as "abramis brama" is nothing more than the scientific name for the Carp Bream, a popular angling fish. This may explain where they have been for the past four years. This is not technically metal, more like Sabbath / Cream flavoured rock with stoner grooviness, but they boast a member of Count Raven and an ex-member of Grand Magus amongst their ranks, which should boost their metal credentials. Abramis Brama are unabashed proselytisers of the almighty riff, and the album is full of rocking rhythms, but they do not jam so many riffs into one song that it descends into a riff salad. Exceptions to their riff-based songs arise in the form of "N.E.J.", an acoustic number with a slight Southern flavour and the jazz-tinged closer "Komme Hen". The lyrics are in Swedish, so it's not clear what their preferred topics are, but something is definitely lost when you can't understand the language and it's not the Cookie Monster at the mike. If you're in the mood for something a bit more exciting than sitting with rod in hand, give this one a spin.
