Hyadningar - _The Weak Creation_
(Totalrust, 2009)
by: Quentin Kalis (8.5 out of 10)
Totalrust is not a label I would associate with black metal, and such a combination is analogous to No Colours releasing power metal -- but if they had to stray from their roster of dirty and slow-as-molasses doom, this is as good a choice as any. Members of Funeralium feature, in what is the converse: where Funeralium is a lurching deep-end beast proceeding at the pace of a tortoise on Valium, Hyadningar is a speedy, complex and trebly beast with labyrinthine twists and turns, imbuing it with a sense of barely restrained chaos. Bass is barely discernible, appearing only as a low hum in the background -- I wasn't kidding about the treble tone. Once again Thierry is at the mike, providing varied vocals but sticking predominantly to his ear-piercing shrieks of despair. There is little difference between this and their previous album, apart from incremental changes relating to better production, and tighter compositions that one expects -- nay, demands -- as experience is gained and skills develop, but is tighter, less convoluted and overall, a superior listen to their debut.
