Hyadningar - _Imminent Useless Soul_
(Ewiger Hass Porductions, 2006)
by: Quentin Kalis (8.5 out of 10)
I, like many others, grew up with the Asterix comic books; and one aspect everyone remembers is the "magic potion" which provided a short burst of superhuman strength. I can only conclude that the French are drinking from a cauldron filled with something similar, only it increases muscle prowess rather than brute strength, as once again I am confronted by a quality French band.

Hyadningar is a project of the vocalist/bassist and drummer of Ataraxie. The highlight is the varied approach to vocals, incorporating the despairing screams of It (Abruptum) through to the anguished shrieks of Varg Vikernes and the growls of Attila. This is in addition to more standard black metal shrieks and death grunts. Not that the music is any slouch either; it varies from the mournful through to militaristic through to catchy headbanging aggression. And I am still describing the first song!

The remaining songs are not as chaotic as the opener, but frequent rhythm changes and unexpected turns ensure it remains somewhat less than restrained. But do not mistake this for a negative -- this is a fine debut for both Hyadningar and the newly established label Ewiger Hass. Let's hope there is more to come. In the meantime, I think it's time I had a listen to Ataraxie...
