Root - _Zjeveni_
(I Hate Records, 2009)

Looking for intricate, layered prog-tech death? Try the next review maybe; you won't find any of that here. Enjoy the epic feel on later Root albums? Move along, you won't appreciate this -- it may as well be a different band. This is their debut album originally released in 1990, although many of the songs were present in demo form before then. Heavily inspired by Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost with just two or three riffs per song, this was never intended as anything other than a primitive slice of proto-black/thrash. But what a slice... Together with Big Boss' uniquely mooned vocals being placed unusually high in the mix and the ominous aura informed by his deeply held Satanic beliefs (LaVeyan), the result is a truly special album that fully deserves any and all "cult" accolades. And all lyrics are in Czech for that extra ritual feel. Is this better than _Hell Symphony_? Is _Morbid Tales_ better than _To Mega Therion_?
