Root - _The Book_
(I Hate Records, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (6 out of 10)
Root is widely regarded as a cult Czech outfit, but this re-released 1997 album is not cult. This is not to cast aspersions on its merits, but simply to point out that this is not the same Root that recorded _Hell Symphony_. Sure, the line-up is relatively constant, but the dark metal within is a far cry from their early proto-black thrash. The music has evolved by any standard. The songs are longer, more intricate and nuanced. The musicianship and arrangements are superior as is their command of the English tongue, but they have not departed from the Church of Stan roots (ahem). The obligatory bonus tracks include demo and preproduction versions, which are actually interesting to listen to, as they have more industrial flavour than the final product. It's improved in virtually all aspects, but you know what? It just isn't the same.
