Vomitory - _Carnage Euphoria_
(Metal Blade Records, 2009)

If I had to compare Sweden's Vomitory to anything, I'd have to liken them to the last Rambo flick. In much the same way as Sly unleashing all manner of tooled-up hell on militants in the Burmese jungles broke no new ground in the action film genre, Vomitory's latest offers its chosen medium nothing even vaguely unique, and yet still somehow manages to come off as a competent and utterly entertaining effort. Just in case you've managed to miss them over the course of their two decade existence, track titles like "The Ravenous Dead" will take all the guesswork out of the band's agenda -- they plough as much effort into making their death metal old-school as they do in ensuring their lyrics will send PMRC types flying into hysterics.Yet where their previous album, 2007's _Terrorize Brutalize Sodomize_ came across as hokey and... well, just a little bit shit, _Carnage Euphoria_ finds them laying down the gauntlet with their gory gospel; blasting through ten tracks with admirable fervour and a nose for a catchy riff. "Ripe Cadavers" is a perfect example of what they're capable of when firing on all cylinders; a tune drenched in tradition, executed with such attitude, conviction and belligerence that it will handily tunnel its way into the coldest, most elitist heart. Yup, genre leaders they most certainly aren't, but _Carnage Euphoria_ could undoubtedly be the sleeper hit of 2009.
