What distinguishes Deathchain from label mates and fellow thrashers Urn? Or to put it another way, why is this good whilst Urn is narcoleptic? The answer, dear reader, is their approach: Urn are one of thrash's recycling depots, whilst Deathchain offer something new and invigorating. OK, just invigorating, it would be a step too far to pretend their deathrash offers anything particularly innovative, and I sure wouldn't suggest anything too imaginative from a band who insist on having "dead" or "death" in every album title. Even given Finland's friendliness towards metal, I wouldn't expect this to have made it to #13, or anywhere close to the Top 10 -- this is hardly upbeat Bodom stuff. The best song has been left til last: an epic number worshipping at the altar of HP Lovecraft. (Seven minutes may be de rigueur for the doomsters; a bit of a challenge for their preferred style, but they pull it off, by taking the aggro down a notch or two.) Proof that Finland has more to offer than overly cheerful humpaa metal and melodeath power metal.
