Deathchain - _Cult of Death_
(Dynamic Arts Records, 2007)
by: Jackie Smit (8 out of 10)
Thrash and death metal collide on this unashamedly amatory release from the Finnish outfit formerly known as Winterwolf. Following a similar bent to last year's _Deathrash Assault_, the opening dirge of "Deathhammer" erupts with enough vitriol and spite to put many higher profile acts to shame. With only tenuous smatterings of melody breaking up the otherwise relentlessly atonal riffing, KJ Khaos spits out every vocal line as though his larynx were on fire, while the rest of the band comes up trumps on every other technical level."Hour of the Exorcist" and "Pit of the Possessed" up the belligerence even more; the latter track peaking with a spine-snapping Exodus-style groove that has enough clout to make up for any shortcomings Deathchain may have in the originality department. Interestingly, _Cult of Death_ is reported to have debuted at number seventeen on the Finnish Top 40. If only the rest of the world shared the same impeccable taste.
