Heavy Lord - _Chained to the World_
(Solitude Productions, 2007)
by: Quentin Kalis (8.5 out of 10)
Thirty seconds. That's all it took for me to be drawn into Heavy Lord's universe, a world filled to overflowing with heavy, trudging yet memorable hooks and rhythms that will ensnare even the most hardened cynic of their traditional doom inspired metal. Initially I found the alternation between mid-length (five minutes) and tracks double the length disconcerting, but they are such consummate songwriters that the very thought they should have edited certain songs was tantamount to blasphemy. The songs are fairly varied, ranging from up-tempo mid-paced numbers such as the title track "Chained to the World" through to the slow and drawn out "Maelstrom", which is practically an instrumental due to the near absence of lyrics. Combined with effective key and tempo changes, even a grind fan would be hard-pressed to complain of boredom. An excellent release likely to receive many more listens in the future.
