Vespers Descent - _Reality Dysfunction_
(Prime Cuts Music, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (5.5 out of 10)
The first four tracks of this EP consist of Gothenburg inspired melodeath, with all the usual accoutrements. It's melodic, energetic and catchy, but so what? This hardly renders it any different from others of their ilk, and an ill-advised cover of "Blinded by Fear" (At the Gates) merely serves to emphasize their derivative nature rather than provide an alternate interpretation of a well-loved classic. The EP ends with what was probably intended as throwaway filler; however this acoustic track is anything but, and is the EP's surprising highlight. If I sound overwhelmingly negative, it's not because this is a particularly horrible EP; it's just that I've heard it all before and all too often.
