Austrian Death Machine - _Total Brutal_
(Metal Blade, 2008)
by: Jackie Smit (7.5 out of 10)
With San Francisco mentalists Arnocorps already amusing audiences with their brand of punk-infused Schwarzenegger-worship, another act plowing the same comedic landscape might seem a little redundant. Disturbingly however, it seems that the governor of California's cinematic legacy has some mileage in it yet, as Austrian Death Machine's Metal Blade debut proves en masse. A vehicle for As I Lay Dying's Tim Lambesis, who oversees all instrumentation and larynx-abuse on the record, _Total Brutal_ proves to be significantly more enjoyable than _An Ocean Between Us_ -- and it's not just because of the laughs either. "Get to the Choppa" and "Come With Me If You Want to Live" are punchy slabs of modern metal goodness, delivered with a level of technical conviction that at times completely outshines the piss-taking. The between-song larking about is hilarious too, particularly when "Arnold" proclaims that he hates the band "As I Lay Crying"; a statement which would ironically echo many CoC-readers' sentiments, I'm sure.
