Sala - _Schut ente Ring worts_
(Autarkeia, 2005)
by: Quentin Kalis (6 out of 10)
This is going to be a short review; not because this is a short album, not with a 50 minute playing time, but simply because there really isn't that much going on. Although there are two tracks listed, there is only one on my copy. I'm assuming it was an error which led to the melding, as there is a distinct gap between two very different sections. The first song "His: Entering the Dream" consists of a persistent beat, like the throbbing of a heart, combined with a drone and whispered voices. Depending on your outlook, the entire effect is either hypnotic or repetitive. Towards the end of the song some string instrument is briefly played, providing some belated yet much needed variety. "The Last Words of Hassan Sabah" features frantic whispering, but retains the ritual atmosphere, and contains more effects, albeit in the background. And that's it. If this degree of minimalism is to your taste, then you might enjoy this, but the songs are generally too simplistic and too long to be effective numbers, even within the realm of ritual ambience.
