Nachtmystium - _Instinct: Decay_
(Battle Kommand Records, 2006)
by: T. DePalma (6.5 out of 10)
Never able to pull off the traditional black metal aesthetic in any meaningful way, Nachtmystium now turn to a more novel approach, remolding the brand in a sci-fi concept of quicksilver guitars screeching over crusty bass dirges and effects samples that seem to melt off the soundboard. The rasped and thrashy bits remain (the former just barely registering), extending the sound of their _Eulogy IV_ with a more inclusive philosophy, perhaps opened to transform since main songwriter Azentrius' experience in Twilight. Indeed, Nachmystium itself usually appears to be collaboration, as members of Cult of Daath, Krieg and Chris Black (Pharaoh, Superchrist) contribute for this latest album.

There has been some emphasis (in reviews and interviews) put on the inspiration of groups like Earth and Pink Floyd, but nothing so blatant has found its way into _Instinct: Decay_, save for a false nostalgia due to the album's awful sound quality and a touch of the wah-wah pedal. However, there is kind of a back to basics approach with the more evocative tracks reflecting a mixture of hardcore punk and British heavy metal ("Antichrist Messiah", "Chosen by No One"). Tracks with the least expansion still work as solid black metal pieces, and the overall result is less conceited and crutched upon its influences when compared with other groups of similar tendencies. Though still rough around the edges, the group may have finally found its niche.
