Silent Voices - _Building Up the Apathy_
(Low Frequency Records, 2006)
by: Pedro Azevedo (7 out of 10)
With two full-length albums already out in 2002 and 2004, Finland's
Silent Voices make a timely return in 2006 with their third effort
_Building Up the Apathy_. Not a band I can claim any familiarity with,
Silent Voices name Dream Theater as their main influence and turn out
to be a melodic metal act with major symphonic and progressive
leanings; and a rather good one at that. They could have used some
more Nevermore-like crunch in their production, but for a symphonic
power metal album this is actually pretty good on that front, which
helps a lot -- watered down synth rock this is not. Silent Voices are
able to imbue the music with plenty of energy for the most part,
although the softer passages (like much of the start of "Distorted"
and "Hollowed") tend to be their downfall as far as I am concerned,
and play a major role in preventing a higher rating. While I could
have certainly done without those softer vocals and keyboard bits
however, _Building Up the Apathy_ still remains a very reasonable
album by what is clearly a talented group of musicians.
