My Dying Bride - _Anti-Diluvian Chronicles_
(Peaceville, 2005)
by: Quentin Kalis (no rating)
The concept behind this triple CD probably sounded good on paper: select several tracks from each album (those tracks which the band consider to be their best compositions), arrange them in reverse chronological order, and toss in a few remixes to attract their hardcore fanbase. Musically, there is little to find fault with My Dying Bride, as they are, after all, one of the best doom bands currently operating. There are a few striking omissions and questionable selections, however: "Black God" is included here, but not "Your River" or "The Songless Bird". But this is a moot point, as even if this monstrous collection had the exact same tracklist that I would have chosen, I would still not have seen the point of this CD. Retailing at about $30, it is too expensive for a casual purchase, and only the hardcore fan would be interested in paying for songs he already has -- the three remixes are uninspired filler. I have provided no rating, as no rating could accurately convey the quality of the music yet simultaneously reflect the utter pointlessness of this release. If you have $30 that you just have to spend, use it to buy two My Dying Bride studio albums instead.
