At the Gates - _Terminal Spirit Disease_
(Futurist [US], 1995)
by: Brian Meloon (8 out of 10)
Although this was a 1994 release in Europe, it didn't make it to the States until 1995. That's our loss, since this is a really good disc. It's much better than 1992's _The Red in the Sky is Ours_, basically in every way, although it is missing a standout track like "Windows". It also suffers from "Desultory-syndrome", in that about half the stuff is really lush, melodic, pseudo-black metal, and the other half is standard death metal fare. Even worse, both styles tend to be mixed together in each song, often without smooth transitions between them. Still, the interesting stuff here makes up for the average stuff, and this is a very good disc.
