Fear thy Name - _I - The Awakening_
by: Pedro Azevedo (3 out of 5)
Darkened traditional metal with not-very-harsh black vocals and some keyboards is basically what this demo is about. Fear thy Name achieve a decent level of metallic intensity at times, but it seems to me like they need to make up their mind as to whether they want their sound to be enjoyed as traditional metal or something darker, because the mixture is at present not entirely successful. Still, the band shows some reasonable skill, the production is good for a demo, and the songwriting proves they have a few ideas (even if their guitar soloing yearns for improvement). Take away the redundant keyboard intro and outro, and what's left is a band that sounds like they have some potential but who still need to sharpen up and focus into a much more impressive entity than this. In other words, they need to mature as a band, but at least they've got decent foundations to build upon.
