Xul - _Regie Sathanas_
by: Quentin Kalis (4 out of 5)
Drakkar Productions, who have re-released this as part of their demo cassette line, can be counted upon to deliver solid, if creatively limited albums, and this is no exception. Three invocations to the Horned One comprise this demo, leaving not a second spare for frivolous frills. Xul's minimalist approach combines Mayhemic ferocity with tremolo riffs dancing above. Production is lo-fi, but sufficiently advanced to convey the brutal minimalism and necessary cold atmosphere without undue impediment. It's not perfect, not even for this release: the vocals are occasionally too high in the mix. Nor are they assisted by the presence of one or two narrated passages, which do nothing but add juvenile theatrics to an otherwise considered demo. If Xul were a food, they would be a stew: unpretentious, straightforward and filling.
