Scaphism - _Butchered and Devoured_
by: Quentin Kalis (3 out of 5)
A handful of bands still release demos and albums on the outdated tape format, but almost all belong to the black metal genre, and Scaphism is the first thrash /death hybrid that I know of to release a demo on cassette lately. They only include two songs, but long enough to draw two tentative (it's hard to issue an accurate judgment based on just two songs) conclusions: a) Scaphism do not venture too far into the Land of Originality, but b) do what they do solidly and proficiently. The million dollar question is whether they can reproduce this over the course of a full-length and maintain listener interest, but once they've have upped the ante with a another demo or two, I'm sure a willing label will provide them with an opportunity.
