Irminsul - _Urberg_
by: Quentin Kalis (4 out of 5)
Irminsul are another band I was introduced to through the _Nordic Warchants_ compilation. (It is highly recommended for anyone interested in hearing the new generation of Viking / Pagan / Folk metal.) Irminsul's contribution to the compilation was "Haxhammeren", which is featured on this three track demo.

"Haxhammeren" is not a surprising choice, as it is their best track. The fiddler provides a jaunty, almost Celtic (Irminsul are a Swedish band) edge with an infectious melody. However, the guitar playing is basic, barely venturing above chugging riffs. However, the guitar performance is more demanding on the other two tracks, and whilst they never cause paroxysms of ecstasy in guitar virtuosos, the other numbers feature more intricate guitar work, venturing beyond chug-a-lug riffing.

Perhaps the overall tone is a bit too upbeat, even by the upbeat standards of folk metal. But it's catchy and I eagerly await their debut album, which is reportedly due for release in the near future by _Nordic Warchants_ compilers Det Germanske Folket.
