Envy the Dead - _Decay Into Madness_
by: Jeremy Ulrey (2.5 out of 5)
I realize an artist has a difficult time refraining from overexplanation when it comes to defending the quality of their work in demo form, but when nearly the entirety of the band's press release reads like one long apology, blaming both the recording facility for refusing to return the band's tapes as well as one band member after another dropping out at inopportune moments, well... it does tend to raise a red flag in my cynical mind. Fortunately, Envy the Dead don't have all that much to apologize for. Sure, there's nothing on this three song demo that we haven't heard before, and yeah, it kinda does sound like crap, especially the guitars, but the blackened vocals are promising, which is sort of strange considering the band lost their singer and decided to split vocal duties amongst the three remaining members for the purposes of this recording. Here's hoping Envy the Dead get their shit together and don't end up emulating their own moniker.
