Memories Lab - _Empathy_
by: Quentin Kalis (3 out of 5)
Despite describing themselves as a progressive metal band, Memories Lab sound more like a prog band in the making, as their music isn't sufficiently complex or technical to satisfactorily justify such a description. Sure, there are some different time signatures and they sound superficially like they belong in this category, but there is little else to suggest a band with a progressive mindset. The keyboardist sounds particularly simplistic and could be a bit more imaginative on his key tinkling.

My copy, at least, sounds as if it is sourced from MP3. I am aware that this is a demo, not a studio work, and it is still sufficiently clear to appreciate their melodies and nuances, but it would have sounded more potent if the guitars had a stronger bite.

Although I may seem to be overwhelmingly negative, Memories Lab are far from being teenagers clumsily banging out "Transilvanian Hunger" in their parents' basement. They can all play their instruments (a moot point regarding the keyboardist) and construct engaging numbers.

Overall, this is a rather patchy demo, but given that _Empathy_ is their third demo together, methinks it is time to hone their songwriting and technical skills and release a debut that will be truly worthy of belonging to the elite pantheon of outstanding prog metal.
