A relative newcomer from Slovenia, Mor-Zaboth ply their trade in an atmospheric, emotionally distant black metal assault. Beginning with the title track, the band show a knack for mixing the forlorn, ambient elements with deft melodic phrasing. Eschewing the increasingly abandoned cavernous wall of sound approach, Mor-Zaboth prefer instead a relatively warm, expansive sound, with mid-paced, triplet-picked chords layered over ambient keyboard washes and dynamic rhythmic changes."The Spectre" in particular is a well written black metal song: an instantly memorable yet melodically basic guitar riff plays counterpoint with a lulling synth line, blast beats phasing in and out the track's progressive structure. "Battle With the Gods" has a nifty guitar riff that hints briefly at an acoustic interlude before launching full scale back into the breach.
Neither technically proficient nor brazenly sloppy, Mor-Zaboth focus on the basics and work to their strengths, which are a flair for good (if not great) songcraft and a cohesive band chemistry. Look to hear more from these guys in the future.
