Luci Tristis - _Simplex Mortalis_
by: Quentin Kalis (4 out of 5)
In my considerably less than humble opinion, the black metal hotspot has moved eastwards since the days of Euronymus and Varg. Yet the ex-Soviet sates are not the only hotbeds of black metal supremacy; one such hotbed can be found in the Gaulic nation, which has an extensive litany of quality black metal, dating back to the days of Les Legiones Noires. But many quality bands are below the radar -- hence the raison d'ĂȘtre of Eisiger Mond, which has released excellent Francophone black metal demos.

Luci Tristis is no different in that respect from their peers, performing an outstanding strain of melancholic black metal. The melancholy only really kicks in during the latter half of the demo, but the first few songs are no less poorer in its absence. No drummers are credited and the timing suggests a machine -- pity, as a real drummer is always preferable to the sterility of a machine.

The demo is bookended by two atmospheric pieces -- the intro is the usual black metal nonsense, but that's what the "skip" button is for. The outro is an unexpected piece that is seemingly inspired by Summoning, with a similar fantastical atmosphere, keys and booming percussion. Eisiger Mond Productions sure knows how to pick them!
