Cryonik - _Second Journey_
by: Quentin Kalis (3.5 out of 5)
Originally conceived as Cryonic, the name was changed to Cryonik, presumably either to avoid confusion with a similarly named band or to create a complete break from previous endeavours, much like wussy third wave black metallers Covenant's descent into absurdly uniformed industro-metallers The Kovenant. And speaking of The Kovenant, it is clear that their reincarnation acted as a significant influence for their industrial metal.

By comparison to Kovenant, Cryonik's songs tend to be more straightforward, with fewer EBM aspects in favour of a stronger focus on the more metallic elements. Vocals are a throaty yet discernible groan not at all unlike Lex Icon. Although _Second Journey_ is not badly produced, Cryonik would benefit from a more potent guitar tone. What brought a grin to my face was the inventive looped sample in an interlude (a thankfully short one -- it wouldn't have worked as a lengthier song) which incorporated the rather musical tones of a dial-up modem.

In closing, Cryonik's demo does show some potential, although more work will have to be done before he will be lighting up the dancefloors at goth and industrial gatherings.
