Deinos Mastema - _Atavisme_
by: Quentin Kalis (3.5 out of 5)
As with the other demos released on Eisiger Mond Productions, this project of one Wintersieg presents black metal of above average quality with acceptable production. Deinos Mastema appears to possess a liking for indulging in unnecessary atmospherics, which interferes with his grimly melancholic black metal interpretation. Of course, moody pieces do have their place, especially in this sort of relentless despair; but are clumsily utilised on _Atavisme_ -- for example, ivory tinkling is needlessly tagged on to the end of several songs, while an atmospheric interlude might have been effective if it hadn't been so long so as to disrupt the flow of the CD. Despite the presence of a riff that sounds like it was taken straight from a Satanic Warmaster album, Deinos Mastema clearly do have something more to contribute to depressive / suicidal black metal subgenre, but they need to limit their penchant for moody ambience and to incorporate it more effectively.
