Subliminal Fear - _Demo 2005_
by: Quentin Kalis (3 out of 5)
At an even earlier stage of their still nascent career, Subliminal Fear performed covers of In Flames and At the Gates, who left an indelible mark on this three track demo. As the astute reader has probably guessed by now, they perform Gothenburg style melodic death -- and generally do a decent enough job. But there are several factors mitigating against the purchase of this demo, the most important of which is the existence of every single other band in this vastly overpopulated subgenre. Subliminal Fear do not present anything that will allow them to stand out from the melodeath masses. Despite the overwhelmingly negative attitude present in the preceding paragraph, Subliminal Fear do possess several positives: they are competent musicians, possess decent songwriting skills and are able to offer more than a few catchy riffs. The problem is that they simply don't offer anything to make me choose them over any other arbitrary melodeath band -- and more's the pity.
