Methadrone - _Erroneous Enlightenment_
by: T. DePalma (3.5 out of 5)
Methadrone is the new musical endeavor of Craig Pillard, notorious ex-front man for Incantation, Disciples of Mockery and about a dozen other short-lived projects throughout the years.

These six tracks take a sharp turn away from the familiar death metal milieu (excepting, of course, the vocal growls), instead experimenting with ambient non-structures and pounding rock riffs akin to mid-period Godflesh or Swans. The twist is that, like Pillard’s former band Womb, Methadrone is comprised of two bass guitars and a drum machine only. The set-up isn't purely for gab and the band achieves a thick, submerged atmosphere that matches the apparent content of the lyrics (drug addled titles like "Dextropropoxyphene" and "Dozer", with it's chorus of "Overdozerrrr!" are unmistakable). Unfortunately the amateur mixing disarms some of the material here and the songs appear harsher than they seem intended to actually be, also leaving the vocals too overpowering and misplaced within each cadence.

Though much refinement is in order, _Erroneous Enlightenment_ is a promising entrance into new directions and worth its time for those that appreciate a challenge.
