Forest of Shadows - _Dysfori Feeri_
by: Pedro Azevedo (4 out of 5)
Here's something you probably wouldn't expect after I told you Forest of Shadows are from Gothenburg, Sweden: they play doom/death metal. The band also uses keyboards, acoustic guitar and a violin in their music, which, while hardly a novelty, is nevertheless potentially worthwhile if the band has enough skill. And they do. As a matter of fact, I think they are a band to watch out for in the doom scene in a not very distant future, judging by the two songs featured on this twenty minute long demo CD. The music is usually slow and dirgeful (but not monotonously so), well performed and decently produced. They remind me vaguely of the Portuguese Desire [CoC #17, CoC #30], who also use the contrast between painfully slow sections and somewhat faster ones. Forest of Shadows aren't quite as slow as Desire, however, but also aim for a rather majestic sound themselves. The violin sections expectably bring to mind My Dying Bride; early Anathema and Katatonia are other influences. Forest of Shadows still generally avoid sounding a lot like either of the aforementioned bands, though. While not incredibly complex or goundbreakingly innovative, this is still well done, quite enjoyable and definitely very promising. This demo is available for gratuitous download as 44 kHz, 128 kb/s MP3 files.
