Skepticism - _ethere_
(Red Stream, 1997)
by: Drew Snow (8 out of 10)
Purveyors of funereal, minimalist doom, Skepticism's _ethere_ is a three song MCD prelude to their upcoming full-length, _Load and Aethere_. Twenty-seven minutes of purely primitive doom metal, _e_ evidences Skepticism's proclivity towards epic-length, drawn-out, scarce song arrangements, consisting for the most part of simple, repetitive, almost trance-like drums, long, widely spread, rumbling keyboard notes, and below guttural, nearly unintelligible vocal work. Of course, _ethere_ is not really the sort of disc that can be listened to and enjoyed by all, it's the kind of thing you either love or hate; listeners who aren't careful may dismiss it as unstructured, unskilled noise, whereas those who know what to listen for will be pleasantly surprised at the amount of depth present. _Ethere_ is undoubtedly a high quality release, all it requires of you is a pair of cognizant ears to recognize the fact.
