Usurpress - _Trenches of the Netherworld_
(Selfmadegod Records, 2012)
by: Dan Lake (4 out of 10)
Any forbearance I had earlier this year for Usurpress' _In Permanent Twilight_ EP has been soundly squashed by their _Trenches of the Netherworld_ full-length. I mean, old school has its place and all, but enough is enough. Your band should occasionally: a) challenge your listeners, b) enchant your listeners, c) frighten your listeners, or d) just plain piss us off. _Trenches_ does none of these things, and it takes 35 minutes to not do them. A reedy violin on ninth track "Dethroned by Shadows" is just too little too late. While reviewing _IPT_, I raised the point that competence without staggering talent was no reason to shovel shit on a band... but it's no reason to dig 'em out and shine 'em up, either.

_Trenches_ is the death metal equivalent of a wakened and ravenous corpse who, instead of clawing out of the cemetery and into your living room, manages only to roll around in its grave and moan impotently. It's still scarier than an inanimate cadaver (a little), and it will indeed try to eat you if you jump in with it and spread yourself prone before its gnashing jaws, but it ain't bringin' the evil straight to your home, is what I'm saying. Guitars rip. Guttural voices gurgle. There are drums. If you were born listening to death metal and you were raised by death metal enthusiasts who sheltered you from all other forms of musical expression and you hear death metal in all your dreams and you wish you were always dreaming 'cause that's where the death metal is, then maybe you should listen to this. But still, probably not.
