Ea - _Ea_
(Solitude Productions, 2012)
by: Chaim Drishner (5.5 out of 10)
Russian enigma Ea has recorded a single, 47-minute track of neoclassical, mellow funeral doom which is as beautiful as it is unadventurous. Emphasizing the instruments rather than the vocals, the long instrumental parts sound like your habitual dose of gentle, classic funeral doom along the lines of Remembrance's _Frail Visions_ or Comatose Vigil's _Fuimus, Non Sumus_ sans the monstrous growls. Everything revolving _Ea_ is gently approached, and even the growls -- the hallmark of funeral doom -- are almost hissed forth rather than growled, almost to the point of sounding like distant black metal rasps.

The music is tight and beautiful rather than dark and crushing; contemplative and almost meditative rather than abysmal and disheartening. Nothing on this recording sounds like a novelty, or like something we have not heard before. It does, however, sound organic and larger-than-life, in contrast to many "bedroom funeral doom" acts who sound hollow, mechanical and synthetic.

Unfortunately for Ea, sounding "right" in an overcrowded sub-genre such as funeral doom is by no means enough nowadays. Listeners, especially the funeral doom veterans, need a challenging experience, something to blow them away -- and this album definitely does not deliver a mind blowing experience.

Ea's self-titled album is a good place to start for anybody who's curious about the magic and majestic qualities contained within the funeral doom sub-genre; funeral doom for beginners, if you will. An almost instrumental, classically-oriented, beautiful album, yet redundant in the same breath.
