Adrift for Days - _Come Midnight..._
(Independent, 2012)
by: Aly Hassab El Naby (7 out of 10)
Extended sound waves with an imposing aura break through the stillness of the night. They did not come alone. They came amidst dense riffs, untamed vocals and a driving bass all wound up in a cloud of thick smoke. Two years after their debut _The Lunar Maria_, Adrift for Days are back with another stoned out 70 minute album in _Come Midnight..._. The same fuzzed out psychedelic ambience is still there, and with enough feedback here to fill up a thrash metal EP. The overall density of _Come Midnight..._ is one of its major aspects and it shows that these Aussies have spent the past two years well.

The first track starts off with two minutes of droned feedback from the guitars, after which the drums and vocals come in at a gut-wrenchingly slow tempo. But that's OK, this is a fifteen minute track that slowly but surely moves from extended sound waves to guitar solos and triplets all around the drums. "Gravity Well" starts off like a distant mantra coming from a thick forest with brooding and ambitious guitars. As the track develops, the guitars become fuzzy and thick; as if to simulate dense smoke emanating outwards from the forest where said mantra began. The smoke then duly disappears, making way once more to the earlier sounds of the guitars.

"House of Cards" is a hauntingly beautiful thirteen minute journey that looks for humanity's raison d'ĂȘtre. The build-ups are smooth and done with crushing tempos and a mesmerizing atmosphere. "Back of the Beyond" starts with a melancholic acoustic guitar segment that is supported by distant and delayed chords and creates a most absorbing effect. There is certainly a lot of maturity coming through these tracks, and that shows a band that's getting more comfortable with its sound and growing gradually. This album's production job is also definitely a much better one than its predecessor. The feedback doesn't overwhelm and the thick distortions don't overpower the rest of the instruments. The drums sound very solid and the cymbals come out just right.

In the grand scheme of things, I'd say this album would be perfect on one of our pristine and minimalist Red Sea beaches on a cold winter's night with some high quality intoxicant. Personally, I'm not one for smoke, so I'll probably never realize this record's full potential. But given the right conditions, I could discover even more goodness nestled peacefully within _Come Midnight..._. This is a must listen for stoner/sludge fans everywhere because it seems like Adrift for Days are on their way to better days in the future.
