Carnal Disfigurement - _Inhuman Devoured Content From Cranial Cavity_
(Inherited Suffering, 2011)

I've always said I wanted to experience brutal death like one would experience wine. However, the desire is not wholly rooted in the hilarious juxtaposition of connoisseurship and brutal death metal. Some of the interest that lies in brutal death, like wine, has a range of subtleties which may go unnoticed to those not educated in the art. Brutal death exists at the far end of the heavy metal bar which listeners must edge their way around scary looking patrons to finally reach. Because metal genres cannot go far enough, there exists sub-division within brutal death called "slam death". Slam death, pioneered by Devourment, Baphomet and Internal Bleeding, is inherently more groove based than their brutal death fraternal twin.

It is still unclear whether or not this genre is a reactionary schism to the growing deathcore population. Slam could be used as high fence to a new set of noisy neighbors. Czech outfit Carnal Disfigurement has made a name for themselves recently as a new entry in slam death. With little save a MySpace profile and a low count Facebook page, the band approaches the brutal death race from a slightly acute angle. Their songs present themselves first as searing walls of noise, but underneath is a medley of subtle notes and finishes. Is that the eternal stench of decay which I detect?

_Inhuman Devoured Content From Cranial Cavity_ is the excessively titled debut from Carnal Disfigurement, following the equally ridiculous _Inhuman Slamming Extermination_. These titles could come from a poor grasp on English grammatical structure or brutal death's obsession with pathology and ridiculous naming conventions. Yes, we get that people are eating brains....but are they zombie brains? Demon brains? Why is the inhuman qualifier there? Regardless, Carnal Disfigurement uses their strengths in a more than adequate debut which is both eye opening, entertaining and brutal.

Once you resign yourself to the fact the next 23(?!) minutes will be spent inside the belly of a dying whale, brutal death can be very fun. Carnal Disfigurement makes use of range by toggling between shrieks and pit dwelling gurgles. "Butchered Maggoty Face" occasionally drops into unsupported territory which sounds like a broken subwoofer blasting dubstep. "Depth of Perverse Depravity" boasts one of the album's grandest moments using a slowed outro bordering on psychedelic rock. Stranger combinations have happened.

Carnal Disfigurement has a wonderful start in being an interesting brutal death act which is inviting to those even not accustomed to the style. Some of the drawbacks of _Inhuman Devoured Content From Cranial Cavity_ are an unwillingness to push beyond the conventions of the style, as well as the already mentioned grasp of the English language. While I can appreciate the attempt at a trans-lingual product, "Cadaveric Stench of Infesting Population" lacks a certain menacing angle. I certainly do not mind metal songs spoken in the native tongue. "Potrebuji procvicovat svou Anglictine" could potentially be more badass than wherever an infesting population would be. Still though, Carnal Disfigurement stands as a new entry in field filled with rotting cadavers. This very green and putrid variety of brutal death maybe inexperienced and punchy for some, but to others it may be the perfect blend in this dark and messy art.
