Rotten Sound - _Cursed_
(Relapse Records, 2011)
by: Aaron McKay (7 out of 10)
Still languishing in the familiar sameness track after track, Finland's aggressive grindsters have added a bit of flavor to their most current delivery. _Cursed_ is Rotten Sound's eighth studio album. Coming a long way from the EP _Still Psycho_, especially, but _Murderworks_ as well, there have been some improvements massaged into the material found on _Cursed_. Following their ferocious 2007 effort, _Cycles_, Rotten Sound has added a texture to their uncompromising deluge of crusty schizophrenic jackhammer rapidity which could be described as "balance".

Of the sixteen tracks making up the nearly twenty-eight minutes on _Cursed_, along about the halfway point Rotten Sound works in some well crafted threads to the songs without forfeiting any of the band's "directed chaos" style of playing. "Declare", "Terrified" and "Scared" best reveal this cautious stylistic development suggestive of early Entombed on one or two occasions.

_Cursed_ is a mature release from a time-tested reputable band. While no one will ever point the finger at Rotten Sound for being leisurely or lethargic, they are nothing if not frenzied in their assault. The unworn technique laid out principally toward the conclusion of _Cursed_ has potential beyond anything put forth from Rotten Sound in the past. This direction could be a (Left-Hand) path worth following.
