Mother Susurrus - _Mother Susurrus_

EPs are like those cheese samples at your nearby supermarket. They give you an idea of what's to come, but you still can't predict the whole picture from it. This is the case with Mother Susurrus' self-titled EP. The two tracks comprising this extended play come from a band that can go from the thick sludge sound to the calm post-rock sound and back, like just any post-metal band does these days. Random abrupt transitions from any of those sounds to the other may seem a little too much, so there's usually some work on a build-up. For the most part of _Mother Susurrus_, the flow isn't that bad, but it doesn't establish a rapport with you, unlike some other bands they may sound like; Mouth of the Architect comes to mind.Having said that, it is also worthy of mentioning that the lead guitar line in the beginning of the calm section of "Whoremonger" fits perfectly with the aural foundation created here. A couple of minutes later, the drumming reached its pinnacle while pushing the song towards its heavier section, then it returns to the first riff and brings the first third of this effort to an end. "Apocatastasis" is the remaining two thirds, and it does overstay its welcome at some points. The drumming is also impressive, but it's the weakness of its mold that makes it sound a little underwhelming for a twenty one minute piece. There is some potential here which probably needs a full-length album to be properly made use of, because this effort could take them either way.
