Oresund Space Collective - _Good Planets Are Hard to Find_
(Transubstans Records / Record Heaven, 2009)
by: Quentin Kalis (6 out of 10)
Hailing from the Copenhagen-Malmo region of Denmark (also known as Oresund -- hence the name), the Oresund Space Collective's fifth CD is more of the same improvised space rock they were performing last time I heard them several years back. And that may be the problem, as I simply did not get the same enjoyment from them as I did then. They haven't changed; its still 100% instrumental, the songs are as long and free flowing as before, with a complete disdain for anything approaching verse-chorus-verse structures. The most overt difference is the sitar featured on the opener and closer, providing an additional, if somewhat superfluous, psychedelic edge. The problem could be the improv; it generally doesn't seem to translate well on to shiny plastic, and next to the more structured First Band From Outer Space (with whom they share members) the Collective is found wanting. Live, I imagine they would be nothing short of fantastic, but the law of diminishing returns applies, and enjoyment fades with each subsequent listen. It's not bad, not even in comparison to _The Black Tomato_; it simply failed to evoke the same emotions and feeling.
