En Declin - _Domino / Consequence_
(My Kingdom Music, 2009)

I readily admit this lies slightly beyond my comfort zone, as despite what their label may want us to believe, this is not metal. If anything, this is mid-tempo alt rock with a dreamy veneer. Unlike his metal counterparts, the vocalist is surprisingly competent with nary a strained warbled off-key note or overwrought goth theatrics to be heard. The melodious songs follow orthodox rock structures with mainstream-baiting accessibility, and are performed by competent musicians. Although I tried, I could not get into this; the only song to leave any sort of impression was a cover of the Beatles classic, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". It's no easy feat to cover a song by a much loved band, but they manage without sacrificing the spirit of the original. This is really something for the NME crowd, who'll probably be able to appreciate it better, but if you can't get enough of "dark" and "emotional" music, you'll probably appreciate more than I did.
