The musicianship on _Purulent Reality_ is fairly standard for the genre. We've got slow, chugging and capable rhythm guitars. Most songs have some lengthy solos, though they're nothing you haven't really heard before. The bass-playing is audible, and follows the rhythm guitars without much deviation or creativity (unfortunately, the bass-player is no Alex Webster). The drumming is mid-paced and pretty simple -- you definitely won't find any blast-beats here. For the vocals, we've got a counterpoint approach with low, guttural vocals offsetting higher-pitched rasps. Now this is where I had a little bit of a problem: to me, the raspier vocals (which are a little annoying) sounded somewhat similar Revenant's Harry Veggian (just listen to "Prophecies of a Dying World" from 1991, and you'll see what I mean). Inasmuch as each of the six songs on this album are over five minutes, the vocals really start to grate on you after a while -- and, for some reason, once you get past the first couple of songs, the raspier vocals become more and more prominent.

So, throughout the album's thirty-six minute duration, I can't really say that there are any "stand out" tracks as they all pretty much blend into one another -- even after many spins of the CD. While the musicianship is pretty solid, the song-writing is rather one-dimensional; and that's really not enough to hold my attention. If you like bands like Necrovation, Blood Mortized, Feral (who, sadly, only have a demo out), The Grotesquery, and Claws, then make sure to give Sectioned a chance; however, be forewarned that you won't hear anything that hasn't already been done before.
