Aquila - _Imperium_
(CDN Records, 2009)
by: Quentin Kalis (7 out of 10)
After the unimaginatively titled demos _I_ and _II_, Aquila have foregone the possibility of recording _III_ in favour of a full-length. Aquila does not present anything radically new, especially as the bulk is comprised of re-recorded demo songs. Initially, I had thought the first demo was substantively different from the second, but the flawless incorporation of re-recorded versions proves otherwise; it was simply the raw sound and less professional approach that led me to believe they were aiming for a more traditional thrash sound, than the modern variant they have embraced (think Machine Head, Killswitch Engage, etc). They have improved greatly since that first demo, with the best production they have had. Some guitar parts, especially the leads, have been fleshed out, resulting in a tighter, more complex and cohesive creation. Worthy of special mention is new number "Breathing Fire, Breathing Life", easily their most intense and aggressive number to date. All indications are that Aquila are on an upward trajectory and rapidly leaving behind their demo days.
