Grimlord - _Dolce Vita Sath-anas_
(Independent, 2009)
by: Quentin Kalis (5 out of 10)
Grimlord's previous full-length was plagued by inadequate clean vocals, a problem that has now been resolved through the use of a more extreme vocal style. But a further problem has surfaced, that of inchoateness, as this album has all the hallmarks of a rushed release. The first three songs progress somewhat haphazardly, the keyboards appearing seemingly at random, but at least they're trying. Then the production bombs like the latest Vanilla Ice, and the vocals are dropped for the remaining six songs -- and Grimlord's black-laced power metal is not made for instrumentals. The only reasonable conclusion I can reach is that while the opening triplet may be a bit rough, the latter six are nothing short of demo tracks tagged on in incomplete form, probably to meet a deadline. This would have been better served as a teaser MCD, which would presumably provide some breathing space for completing and tightening up their material. A demo disguised as a full-length.
