It is conceivable that a trio could have created an album of this nature, but it beggars belief that a duo could be possible for material of this calibre. Vocals have been eschewed, allowing the focus to remain solely on their mathcore-cum-post-metal intricacies and dynamism, yet without sacrificing atmosphere. The usual suspects (such as Isis) have served as influences, but the impact of other less obvious candidates surfaces occasionally -- witness the dancing lead on "This Is a Lost Ambition", strongly reminiscent of mid-era Katatonia, as just one example. Despite the cornucopia of influences, the stylistic shifts rarely sound forced and their compositions do not have a whiff of (everything but) the kitchen sink. Yes, it does sometimes descend into a riff-o-rama, but that comes with the territory and one may just as well complain about indecipherable growls in death metal.
