Sweethead is the latest project to emerge from the musicians centered on Kyuss and its close cousin, Queens of the Stone Age, this time the turn of the latter's guitarist Troy van Leeuwen. To the surprise of absolutely no-one, it sounds a lot like his parent band, but with a female singer. (For those unfamiliar with the Queens, think fuzzy bass, sludgy guitars and vocals that speak to a love of hallucinogens.) Ok, there's a bit more to it than that -- they do have a more pronounced classic rock approach. Vocalist Serrina Sims is a clear asset, with a voice that is seductively beautiful yet different from the usual venders of symphonic-goth-doom. This EP is a hit-and-miss affair, with two great songs book marking two middling tracks and rounded off by a Kinks cover your dad will appreciate. Sweethead have demonstrated they are capable of delivering; they just need to be more consistent in the material they record and select for the inevitable ensuing full-length. Record an entire album with material equal to the title track and I will be first in line.
