Caliban - _Say Hello to Tragedy_
(Century Media, 2009)
by: Jackie Smit (2 out of 10)
Every record deserves two spins at a minimum before it gets banished to the nether-regions of my collection -- at least that's what I keep reminding myself whilst pouring through the latest Caliban platter. Having long been a common name amongst the apparently limited stock of support acts London promoters have deemed fit to use, their brand of Germanic metalcore is by no means new to me, nor have I ever felt compelled to pick up one of their sixth full-lengths. But this time round, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. After all, it's not like they're the annoying stopgap occupying my time in lieu of a grander main event in this instance.

Turns out though that whether you're yawning your way through one of their live sets, or using them as the soundtrack to your morning commute, they suck either way. Each successive cut on _Say Hello to Tragedy_ -is- a tragedy; an uneven quilt of metalcore and melodic death metal off-cuts that no amount of studio trickery can hoist out of the sludgy doldrums of mediocrity. My two spins over and done with, I don't really see the point of ever listening to this again. Chances are -- nor will you.
