Cosmic Atrophy - _Codex Incubo_
(Suffering Jesus Productions / Metabolic Records, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (7 out of 10)
Older aficionados of the death metal art may recall Demilich, who released _Nespithe_ way back in 1993. Together with Timeghoul, they are the main influences behind this duo. They are not a clone band, but even if they were, it would make for a welcome change from all the Suffocation wannabes that litter the scene like pigeonshit on a statue. They are not as technical as Demilich, and they do resort to some nice grooving passages, proceeding largely at mid-pace. At times the album can feel sparse, especially for death metal; however, Cosmic Atrophy has injected sufficient creativity in terms of leads, melodies, breaks and song structures to create an entertaining album. It will not be a classic, but it is likely to get a bit of buzz going in the underground current, which may carry it though to greater success in the future.
