Alestorm should be keelhauled for inspiring the current crop of frilly-shirted tomfoolery, such as this eye-patch adorned quintet of cutlass-wielders, whom I strongly suspect would thrive in a live environment, providing rollicking sojourn. If the band look like Jack Sparrow without the metrosexual overtures, one can only imagine what the audience would look like! Swashbuckling yarns aside, Skull Branded Pirates possess more Iron Maiden-inspired riffs than one can shake a peg leg at, leaving no doubt that the English legends have served as a treasure chest of inspiration. Speaking of which, these buccaneers have accumulated sufficient amounts to pay for a professional production and presentation. OK, the cover pic is a tad amateurish, but I dare any reader not to love the so-stupid-it's-good Jolly Roger with its metal makeover. This is not an album one can take seriously -- it's a fun, light-hearted romp that is neither feeble parody nor self-consciously ironic.
