From Beneath Billows - _Evolve_
(Independent, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (8.5 out of 10)
Emerging from the heartland of black metal, the four lengthy excursions of _Evolve_ are proof that there is life in Norway beyond frowning raccoon-faced youngsters. In their own way, From Beneath Billows' post metal expressions contain the minimalism and sense of desolation that the best of black metal emanates, but with an elegance that the grim hordes can only dream of. The pictures of Norwegian landscapes which adorn the digipak reflect the music within: beautiful, seemingly placid, even empty, but with the potential to unleash great power. The approach is austere; the drums and distorted electric guitar are absent for long stretches, the riffs are simplistic and droning, yet never monotonous or unnecessarily repetitive. The true beauty lies in the structure, and the manner in which they allow their songs to unfurl, in the manner of a newly pupated butterfly spreading its wings for the first time, allowing the minutes to effortlessly slip by.
