Halo Manash - _Am Kha Astrie_
(Aural Hypnox, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (8.5 out of 10)
The incestuous Helixes collective specialises in creating highly ritualistic and disturbing bouts of tribal ambient. It may be tricky to discern the various projects from each other, but the collective as a whole is unique and almost always a joy to listen to, whoever the putative authors of a particular release may be.

Halo Manash is simply another name in their litany of artists, but possibly one of the most disturbing. Just listen to the first couple of songs, which are located somewhere between a shaman on a peyote trip and distressed whales calling to each other within the ocean depths. They use the likes of self-made instruments of bones and antelope horns, as well as less unsettling percussions, chimes and wind instruments. The following songs are not on the same level, but still remain thoroughly disturbing through their unsettling droning minimalism.

As always, attention is paid to presentation and this arrives in a simple yet beautiful hand finished cardboard booklet. It's almost worth having for the packaging alone. This is intended as the second in a trilogy of albums released in 2008. Now it's time for me to have a peek at the other two albums in this trilogy, and I'm sure you will too.
