Different State - _Knar_
(Zoharum, 2008)
by: Quentin Kalis (7 out of 10)
Initially recorded in 1996, this has received the re-release treatment shortly after their split with Sigill, an experimental beast far removed from this cocktail of Sonic Youth, Godflesh and Toll. Distorted yet still lucid bass is at the forefront and accompanied by repetitive yet effective riffs, rudimentary drumming and distant vocals. Few songs deviate from this mould, the exceptions being an abbreviated closer that hints at their later experimentalism and ensuing bonus tracks, creatively entitled "Traktat 1" and "Traktat 2". The former is a beautiful acoustic number and the latter flirts with dark ambience. Different State do not hesitate to state their influences, and whilst many are unremarkable, such as Godflesh, Ministry and Black Sabbath, their presence can be felt, however indirectly, in the guitar performance. This is not to say that they are a guitar driven band; if anything, the bass is primary driver of the music and this is no more metal than Mortiis. In any case, they lack the dynamism of rock or metal, and a greater focus is placed on a hypnotic atmosphere than most. However, the songs are easily distinguishable from each other, despite the common template, and will have something to offer those with a longing for old-school industrial inspiration.
