Machetazo - _Mundo Cripta_
(No Escape Records, 2009)
by: Quentin Kalis (7.5 out of 10)
Machetazo are stalwarts of the Iberian grind scene, and arguably its finest exponents. They are located within the brutal death / goregrind stream; this is not immediately apparent from the Spanish lyrics, but the cover pic of OTT blood-splattered zombies doesn't leave much room for ambiguity. All the songs are covered in a layer of filth, but not so dirty as to be sludge. The vocals are dirty and throaty growls. The songs are short, but not in a ridiculous, Agoraphobic Nosebleed cum DRI way, allowing sufficient time for a song to develop and often settling into a comfortable groove. Nor are they unduly repetitive, remaining as varied as the narrow constraints of their adopted genre allow. Some samples are present, but thankfully very few. I can't pretend that Machetazo are doing anything blazingly original, but it is good to finally hear a decent grind record, one that doesn't attempt to inflict numerous offbeat mathcore rhythms or try to be too clever for their own good with jazzy touches.
